CROWN POINT, Ind. – Police used surveillance video to identify a teenage suspect in the fatal shooting of an 11-year-old northwestern Indiana boy who was shot in a city park after a fight began.
According to an affidavit, surveillance footage showed a group of young males approaching a group of juveniles at Nunez Park in East Chicago on May 5, The Post-Tribune reported . The groups exchanged words before the 17-year-old suspect pulled out a gun and fired at another juvenile. He missed his intended target but the bullet struck David L. Anderson in the head. The groups then scattered.
Anderson had been at the park playing basketball with his cousin, authorities say. He died the next day a Chicago hospital.
Authorities used the video footage to trace the suspect's movements following the shooting. Investigators contacted Central High School, which the suspect attends, to identify him through a photograph, the affidavit states.
The suspect was taken into custody Friday morning during a raid at a home, said Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.
He was charged with murder, attempted murder and attempted battery with a deadly weapon, according to court records. He's being held without bail at the East Chicago City Jail.
