CLEVELAND – The family of a teen who touched a downed power line in Cleveland and became disabled for life has settled a lawsuit for $60 million against two companies responsible for repairing the line.
Court documents say 16-year-old Gasia Thomas suffered a severe brain injury in November 2012 and will require round-the-clock care the rest of her life.
The lawsuit says mistakes by Cleveland Electric Illuminating and First Energy Services resulted in the failure to repair the line downed by remnants of Superstorm Sandy.
An attorney for the two companies declined to comment Friday.
The family previously settled a claim against the city of Cleveland for $700,000 concerning a police officer's failure to stand guard near the line and warn people away.
A family attorney declined to comment, citing a confidentiality agreement.
