Authorities say a police officer fatally shot a man who was holding his teenage son hostage in Tennessee.

A statement from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says officers from the Shelbyville Police Department responded Wednesday night to a report of a hostage situation and arrived to find 53-year-old Jeffrey Darren Hosea holding his son at gunpoint in a camper. The statement says when officers entered the camper, Hosea pointed his weapon at one of them, who opened fire.

TBI agents are investigating the circumstances and interviewing witnesses at the request of the local prosecutor.

Police did not release the identity of the officer. Shelbyville Police Chief Jan Phillips said the officer is a veteran with more than 20 years of experience. He said the officer is white, as was Hosea.
