Authorities say a Maryland police officer shot an armed suspect while he was fleeing arrest.

Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski says officers tried to stop a driver Thursday night who is a suspect in a "series of violent crimes." Police say the unidentified driver led officers on a short chase in Capitol Heights and fled on foot while armed with a handgun.

Stawinski says an officer chased down the suspect before shooting him in the arm. It is unclear whether the suspect raised or fired his weapon. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Police say the suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured during the incident.

Authorities did not say what charges the suspect is facing.
