Kentucky State Police say a man accused of rigging explosive devices has been fatally shot in a confrontation with authorities.

Trooper Shane Jacobs said officials had taken 39-year-old Mark Sawaf to Harlan on Thursday to help find explosive devices that had been set in a wooded area near a subdivision. Jacobs said an altercation occurred during the operation that led to the shooting. He declined to elaborate.

Court documents show Sawaf was charged in June following a federal investigation into the explosion of a trail camera that injured another man.

Jacobs said federal agents, state police, and Lexington police and fire officials took part in the search of a 5-mile radius, which yielded several devices. He said Sawaf was white, but did not release the identity or race of the authority who shot him.
