NEW ORLEANS – Federal prosecutors are asking a judge for time to complete a plea agreement with a former New Orleans police officer charged in connection with the cover-up of deadly shootings by his colleagues after Hurricane Katrina.
Gerard Dugue (DOO'-gay) is set for an Aug. 22 trial, but prosecutors asked for a delay on Wednesday. He was indicted on charges including obstruction of justice in connection with the investigation of shootings at the Danziger Bridge. Two unarmed people were killed and others were wounded there by police on Sept. 4, 2005, days after levee failures caused catastrophic flooding.
Dugue is the lone remaining defendant in the Danziger case.
Earlier this year, four ex-officers pleaded guilty in the shootings; another pleaded guilty in the cover-up. Dugue had pleaded not guilty.
