An Arizona sheriff says three bodies found in a home in suburban Phoenix were those of a mother and her two children.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Tuesday his deputies believe the deaths were a murder-suicide but are awaiting autopsy results.

The sheriff identified the woman during a news conference as Lisa Gerhart, saying she was 45 or 46. Her son was 17, and her daughter was 12.

Arpaio says deputies found a handgun near the woman's body.

Homes in the unincorporated area near Gilbert are surrounded by agricultural land.

Maricopa County Sheriff's officials say multiple dead bodies have been found inside a home in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert.

There's no immediate word Tuesday on how many bodies or their ages or genders.

But sheriff's spokeswoman Courtney Palma says they are being investigated as suspicious deaths at this time.

She says deputies responded about 9 p.m. Monday to a home in unincorporated Gilbert near Power and Chandler Heights roads.

Deputies arrived on the scene and reported funding several dead people inside the home.

Palma says homicide detectives are still at the scene investigating the deaths.
