A retired Army colonel was sentenced to 8 years in prison Tuesday for hitting and killing a Colorado State Patrol trooper with his truck as she was investigating a crash near Colorado Springs.

The Denver Post reports 52-year-old Eric Peter Henderson also was ordered to serve five years of mandatory parole. He had pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while driving under the influence and tampering with evidence in the death of 33-year-old Trooper Jaimie Jursevics.

Prosecutors had said he spent the day drinking at a Broncos game Nov. 15 before he hit the trooper and fled.

Henderson retired from the Army in June 2013 after a 27-year career and was the chief of operations for the Space and Missile Defense Command in his final post.
