EDITOR'S NOTE: Orlando's mayor on Monday revised the death toll in the nightclub shooting to 49, from 50. The 50th body was identified as gunman Omar Mateen.

As a gunman held hostages during a bloody Orlando nightclub siege that left at least 50 people dead early Sunday, witnesses tweeted that they were hiding in the hopes that they could escape alive.

Brandon Wolf tweeted that he and others hid in a bathroom until they heard a lull in the shooting. Then they bolted.

Wolf said one friend died and another was missing.

Another witness said he hid in a dressing room before he got out.

A physician assistant who said his friend was shot claimed he'd never seen so much blood. He posted video of rescue teams outside the Pulse Nightclub.

Police shot and killed the gunman, 29-year-old Omar Mateen, hours after he took hostages.
