A 21-year-old man charged with shooting three people and then fatally striking a Memphis police officer with a stolen car said he intends to hire an attorney in his case.

Justine Welch appeared before a judge by video on Monday morning. Welch said his family was working on hiring a lawyer, and the judge set a Wednesday hearing to find out who the lawyer is.

Welch is being held without bond on charges including first-degree murder, vehicular homicide and attempted first-degree murder.

Police said the three people were shot in two downtown Memphis locations on Saturday night, but they survived. Police said 46-year-old Officer Verdell Smith, who was working with other officers to clear the area, died after being hit by Welch, who was fleeing in the stolen car.
