BEREA, Ky. – Kentucky State Police say a sheriff's deputy has been wounded and a suspect killed in an exchange of gunfire.
Trooper Robert Purdy says in a news release that Madison County Deputy Kevin Crutcher tried to stop a truck Wednesday afternoon on a road near Berea. Purdy says the vehicle pulled into a driveway and the driver began walking toward the house.
The release says the man ignored Crutcher's verbal commands and pulled a handgun and began shooting toward the deputy. Crutcher was hit and returned fire, fatally shooting 51-year-old Daniel Pigg of Berea.
Pigg was pronounced dead at the scene. Crutcher, a nine-year veteran of the sheriff's department, was treated for a gunshot wound to the abdomen and released from a hospital.
Kentucky State Police are investigating the incident.
