Authorities say a 16-year-old was shot and wounded by a Miami-Dade detective after flashing a gun as police tried to stop a car during a carjacking investigation.

The incident unfolded in Miami on Wednesday as detectives were following up on a carjacking. According to a news release, the detectives spotted the vehicle. It made a quick turn and a passenger jumped out, brandished a gun and pointed it at police.

The news release says a detective fired her weapon but missed and the suspect ran. A short distance away the driver and another passenger got out and ran and a teen was shot after pointing a gun at detectives.

The teen was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

According to the news release, the teen is black and the officers are white.
