Video of a retired Marine crawling up a steep hill in California went viral as a testament to his grit and determination, Fox 5 San Diego reported.

Josue Barron lost his left leg and left eye when a fellow Marine stepped on a roadside bomb in 2010 while in Afghanistan. He was filmed this weekend crawling up the hill during a hiking event for veterans at Camp Pendleton.

The hill climb was part of the event where some trekked to see several crosses in place to honor fallen members of Barron’s unit. Barron, who joined the group, removed his prosthetic leg after it became a burden.

The video clip shows fellow vets cheering on Barron with each move. When he reached the top, two men support him.

“I had told myself I want to see those crosses, and it took me five years to get up there,” he said. “I knew I had to get up there some way somehow,” Barron said.

Barron said he is humbled by the attention he received and hope the video serves as inspiration to fellow Marines who may be struggling.
