AUGUSTA, Maine – A man who lived as a hermit in the Maine woods for nearly three decades doesn't want to pay restitution to the state police.
Christopher Knight's lawyer wants the state Supreme Court to vacate a $1,125 restitution request. All other restitution has been paid.
The Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1NQsBOR) reports state police want to be reimbursed for removing a temporary roadway created to provide access to Knight's campsite. Knight attorney Walter McKee says the state is trying to "stretch the meaning of 'restitution.'"
Knight is 50 years old and became known as the North Pond Hermit. Police say he committed 1,000 burglaries and thefts. He pleaded guilty to 13 counts and served about seven months in jail before completing a court program in 2013. He remains on probation.
