Police have arrested a North Carolina man who they say shot his son in the leg for stealing food from a family member.

The Fayetteville Observer reports (http://bit.ly/1U39PdG) that a police statement said 49-year-old Ted Alan Walters of Elizabethtown found out Friday that his son allegedly stole hamburger and bacon from his grandmother's freezer.

The statement said Walters forced his way inside his son's home and shot the 25-year-old in the lower left leg. He told police he shot his son to teach him a lesson.

White Lake police Lt. Mike Salmon said Joshua Walters was taken to a Wilmington hospital with injuries not considered to be life threatening.

Ted Walters is charged with first-degree burglary and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He is jailed under a $50,000 bond. It's not known whether he has an attorney.
