An eight-generation family farm in Vermont isn't changing its tradition of doing business with the honor system, even after someone stole more than 63 gallons of maple syrup from their farm stand.
The door is left unlocked at the Miller and Son Orchards farm store in Dummerston. Patrons leave money for eggs, meat, apples, and syrup.
The theft, which happened between Sunday night and Monday morning, marks the second time since 2003 that someone made off with a large amount of syrup from the farm. A Putney man was convicted in 2005 of stealing about 75 gallons, using his own labels and selling it.
Owner Read Miller told The Rutland Herald that the theft will not change the family farm's honor system tradition -- but he'll add some cameras.
