A South Carolina firefighter is dead after he was struck by a fire engine while responding to a house fire on Sunday afternoon.

Conway Fire Chief Le Hendrick told local news outlets that firefighter Christopher Gene Ray died while responding to a structure fire.

Cpl. Sonny Collins of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Ray had been riding on a Conway fire engine when he fell off and was struck as the fire truck reversed over him.

The State reported that Ray had been employed with the city of Conway since February 2010.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick scheduled an autopsy for Monday. The South Carolina Highway Patrol was investigating the incident.

No other injuries were reported at the scene.
