A police chief says an officer has been shot and one person has died after police tried to stop a suspected stolen vehicle in a city outside Philadelphia but were fired upon.

Chester Police Chief James Nolan tells WCAU-TV that when officers tried to stop the vehicle Saturday "there ended up being shots fired from the car" and officers returned fire.

He says two people in the car were shot; one of them died.

The officer was taken to Crozer Chester Medical Center; a hospital spokesman says he was listed in critical condition.

Police didn't immediately release the names of the officer or suspects, and didn't return calls for further detail.

At one point, a scuffle broke out among a crowd of onlookers and police used pepper spray.

Chester is about 18 miles southwest of Philadelphia.
