A north Florida woman who was shot in the back by her 4-year-old son this week could face a misdemeanor charge, law enforcement officials said Wednesday.
Jamie Gilt, 31, of Jacksonville, told deputies Tuesday that her son shot her in the back with her .45-caliber handgun while he was sitting in the back seat of her pickup truck.
Capt. Joseph Wells of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office told the Florida Times-Union that Gilt could face a misdemeanor charge if investigators determine that she left the gun in a location where the child could get easy access to it.
Investigators have not been able to interview Gilt about the shooting. She is in stable condition at a local hospital. Her son was unharmed and was reunited with family members. The Department of Children and Families will investigate.
The case has drawn national and international attention after a Facebook page apparently belonging to Gilt was discovered by local media. The site, which was taken down late Wednesday, featured several posts supporting gun rights, including one post that read, in part, "Even my 4 year old gets jacked up to target shoot with the .22"
A Twitter profile with Gilt's name on it featured a photo of her holding a long rifle in one and and a young child in the other.
