A police officer and an armed suspect have been killed in a shootout at a park near a North Texas school.

The confrontation happened about 3 p.m. Tuesday at J.A. Carr Park in Euless (YOO'-lehs), a suburb between Fort Worth and Dallas. Euless Police Chief Mike Brown said officers were responding to a report of shots fired near the park. He says the male suspect opened fire, and the officer returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times. The officer also was fatally wounded. Both died at area hospitals.

No identities have been released.

Two nearby schools were placed on lockdown until the situation was resolved.
