FARGO, N.D. – A Fargo police officer was shot during a standoff with a domestic violence suspect and is not expected to survive his injuries, police in North Dakota said early Thursday.
Officer Jason Moszer, 33, responded to the standoff Wednesday night and parked near the home the suspect was barricaded inside, Fargo Deputy Police Chief Joe Anderson said.
The incident began around 7 p.m. after a report that the suspect had fired a gun at his wife. Authorities said the suspect continued to fire multiple rounds from inside the home.
Moszer was struck by the suspect's gunfire, Anderson said. A SWAT team in an armored vehicle retrieved the injured officer and took him to a medical facility, where his family was with him.
"He is not expected to survive," Anderson said.
The standoff ended early Thursday morning, though officials did not immediately say how the situation was resolved or give an update on the man barricaded in the house. Fargo Police Chief David Todd said earlier that the man might have been shot in an exchange of gunfire with a SWAT officer.
Todd said in a news release that neighbors did not need to continue sheltering in place.
The standoff began when the man's son called dispatchers and said the suspect had fired a gun at his wife.
The caller and his mother were able to escape the home unharmed, Anderson said.
The suspect then called dispatchers and told them to evacuate nearby houses because he planned to open fire.
Police did door-to-door checks on nearby houses and don't believe anyone else is injured, Anderson said.
