A Minneapolis man killed his 89-year-old mother Thursday after finding bedbugs in the apartment the two shared, police said.

Michael Gallagher, 62, faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of Patricia Gallagher, according to FOX9, after he allegedly beat her over the head with a sculpture, smothered her with a pillow, strangled her and ultimately suffocated her to death with a garbage bag.

Michael Gallagher was initially helping his mom clean, according to the criminal complaint. But the sight of bedbugs – and his inability to get rid of them – allegedly sent him into a rage. Gallagher was also convinced his lease wouldn’t be renewed, authorities said.

After killing his mother, Gallagher surrendered to police.

He’s scheduled to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.
