Two convicted killers are being charged with murder in the August slaying of a notorious California inmate, just days after he was released into the general prison population.

The Sacramento County District Attorney's office announced the charges Tuesday in the killing of 71-year-old Hugo Pinell at a maximum security prison east of Sacramento.

Pinell himself was a killer who spent 45 years in segregation units after a bloody 1971 escape attempt at San Quentin State Prison.

Prosecutors and the public defender's office say Jayson William Weaver and Waylon Douglas Pitchford do not appear to have attorneys.

Both inmates already are serving life sentences at California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi. They are both 38 years old.

Their first court appearance is set for March.
