State police say a 49-year-old man was killed when the liquid manure hauler he was driving crashed on a rural road in western New York, spilling thousands of gallons of animal waste.

Troopers say Richard W. Scharet Jr., of Castile, was driving a tractor-trailer in his Wyoming County hometown Monday when he lost control of the vehicle on a curve. The truck swerved into the other lane, overturned, and hit a utility pole and tree before coming to rest in a ditch.

Troopers say Scharet was ejected from the vehicle and died. Police say a tank being hauled by the truck ruptured when it hit the pole, spilling 5,000 gallons of liquid manure.

A state hazardous materials team responded to the scene to contain and clean up the spill.
