BERLIN – A Somali man has filed a complaint against the German government alleging it is partly responsible for the death of his herdsman father in a 2012 U.S. drone stroke.
Prosecutors in Zweibruecken said Tuesday the man, represented by an American organization, says Berlin shares responsibility because he alleges drone strikes in Africa are planned and operated from U.S. Africa Command and Ramstein Air Base, both based in southern Germany.
Spokesman Martin Grasshoff said the complaint is being examined to determine whether there is enough evidence to open an investigation.
A Cologne court rejected a similar case in May, saying there was little German authorities could do due to treaty obligations, and the U.S. had agreed to operate Ramstein in accordance with German and international laws.
