Former federal prosecutor appointed to represent friend of Charleston church shooting suspect

COLUMBIA, S.C. – An attorney has been appointed to represent the friend of a white man charged with shooting nine black churchgoers to death.

Court papers filed Monday show that former federal prosecutor Deborah Barbier has been appointed to represent Joey Meek.

Meek pleaded not guilty Friday to lying to law enforcement agents and failing to report what he knew about Dylann Roof's plans. If convicted, Meek faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison for lying to investigators and up to three years for concealing information.

Roof faces possible death sentences in the state and federal systems over the June 17 shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal. Authorities say Meek knowingly lied to an FBI agent when he said he didn't know what Roof was planning.
