HONOLULU – Hurricane Ignacio is expected to continue to strengthen through the weekend and come close to the Hawaiian Islands early next week.
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center says the storm is expected to strengthen during the next 48 hours, then weaken before arriving in Hawaii on Monday.
As of Friday afternoon, Ignacio had maximum sustained winds around 90 mph. Winds are expected to steadily increase to about 110 mph by Sunday afternoon.
The current track of the storm shows it will move just northeast of the state, but that may change.
Even if the storm tracks north of the islands, it could still bring dangerous surf, winds and rain to the state. Much of Hawaii is already saturated with rain water associated with Tropical Storm Kilo.
