Investigators say a 77-year-old man on a motorized scooter who pointed what appeared to be a handgun at Pennsylvania police officers and refused their demands to drop it has been fatally shot by them.

State police say Robert Patrick Quinn was waving the realistic-looking pellet gun around outside an apartment complex for elderly, disabled and low-income residents when officers arrived Sunday night. Quinn lived in the apartment complex in Pittston.

Neighbors say he had recently been diagnosed with cancer. People interviewed by investigators say he had expressed suicidal intentions.

Witnesses say officers told Quinn to drop the weapon at least six times before he was shot.
