Just over one week until the first GOP debate of the 2016 race for the White House. There's been publicity stunts, controversies, speeches, verbal battles and leaked stories.. partly in an attempt to make the cut for the debate.. and open the floodgates of fundraising and clear the hurdles to appearing onstage. The Hill's Bob Cusack will take a look at the field so far for us.

Lots of campaign events today to keep an eye on. We have events from Christie, Walker, Chafee, Sanders and Clinton.

The State Department expected to release 5,000 new pages of documents related to the 2012 terror attack in Benghazi that left 4 Americans dead. They will not, however include emails from

Hillary Clinton.

There’s a 10am hearing on Capitol Hill today on the Iran deal as the Obama Administration continues trying to sell the Iran nuke deal. Secretary of State John Kerry testifies today beginning at 10am. Happening Now regular guest Ilan Berman will be here to react.

There’s also a hearing today on the HHS with testimony from Health and Human Services head Sylvia Burwell. We’ll turn sound at what could be a testy hearing.

There’s also a news conference from the head of U.S. forces in Afghanistan we’ll turn sound from if there’s news.

President Obama gave a big speech at the African Union today.. the first by a U.S. President. President Obama gave himself a little pat on the back saying he could win a third term if he was allowed under the constitution, “I actually think I’m a pretty good president. I think if I ran, I could win. But I can’t.” We’ll ask a political guest if they agree.

There’s news from his trip on   U.S./Africa security and anti-terror efforts, controlling corruption, environmental progress, and stopping anti-gay and lesbian violence and repression. Kevin Corke is in Addis Ababa.

NATO ambassadors holding an emergency meeting today in Brussels.. only the 5th such meeting. Turkey called the meeting to get help responding to the threat from ISIS. ISIS controls a strip of Syrian territory on the Turkish border. There’s been several attacks on Turkey.

A court in Libya sentenced the late dictator Mohammar Qaddafi’s son to death today for war crimes back in 2011.

Stocks fell another 1.7% overnight in China after an 8.5% fall on Monday.

Boston out of the running for the 2024 Olympics. The city’s mayor refused to commit to paying for cost overruns from any games held there. SF and Washington are also possible contenders.
