NEW YORK – The family of a black man who died after being placed in a white police officer's chokehold plan to discuss the $5.9 million settlement reached with the city.
Tuesday's press conference will be held at the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network. Mayor Bill de Blasio also is scheduled to speak at a church memorial service in Garner's honor.
The settlement was announced Monday, almost a year after the 43-year-old died in police custody.
Garner was stopped on July 17 for selling loose cigarettes. A video shows Garner telling the officers to leave him alone and refusing to be handcuffed.
Garner is taken to the ground in what appears to be a chokehold, banned by police policy. The officer claimed it was a legal takedown maneuver known as a "seatbelt."
