An Alabama man faces multiple charges in what police describe as a holdup attempt that was foiled by a quick-thinking pharmacist.

Authorities say 28-year-old Christopher Trail of Red Bay is charged with kidnapping, robbery and theft following in a Thursday incident in Red Bay, in northwest Alabama.

He's also charged in a residential break-in that occurred earlier.

Police say a man entered Redmont Pharmacy with a shotgun and took several people hostage.

Everyone except pharmacist Donna Weatherford was freed, and she gave the man drugs he was requesting. Police say the man later lost consciousness, and Weatherford grabbed the gun and ran outside to safety.

Trail is recovering from a drug overdose, and court records aren't yet available to show whether he has a lawyer to comment on the case.
