A Nevada teenager said Tuesday she's prepared to sue her public school district after her application to charter a pro-life club was rejected.
Angelique Clark, a sophomore at West Career and Technical Academy in Las Vegas, claims the Clark County School District denied her application because it deemed the club too contentious, Fox affiliate KVVU reported.
"It was too controversial, and it would be too exclusive, and it would leave out pro-choice people," Clark quoted the district as saying.
The school district, meanwhile, said the application was rejected for failing to meet charter requirements, according to a statement obtained by KVVU.
Clark sought to create the pro-life organization as a chapter of Students for Life of America, the nation's largest youth pro-life organization.
"I did a lot of research on abortion and I became really passionate about helping women in need of an abortion or would think they needed an abortion," Clark told the station.
Attorneys for the national organization sent letters to Clark's principal, as well as to school district officials, claiming Clark's rights under the First Amendment and Equal Access Act are being violated.
In a statement to KVVU last week, the school district said, "All CCSD clubs must have a faculty adviser before being allowed to form an official club."
"This club currently does not have a faculty member who would commit to sponsoring the club," the statement said. "The district is in the process of reviewing all the facts and circumstances related to this request and has not made a final decision at this time."
Clark's club charter application -- a copy of which was obtained by the station -- is dated December 2014 and includes a faculty adviser's signature.
Attorneys for Clark said they have given the district until June 1 to respond to their letters.
