A man shot by New York City police last week after authorities say he attacked an officer and others with a hammer has been charged with assault.

Thirty-year-old David Baril of the Bronx was arraigned Wednesday via video link from his hospital bed. He did not enter a plea and said "yes" when asked whether he understood the charges.

Baril was shot at least twice and remains in serious condition.

Surveillance video shows the 30-year-old lunging at the officer with a hammer last week near Penn Station, striking her at least three times. Her partner shot him.

Police say Baril struck four others with the hammer last week. He was charged with three of the assaults.

Baril's attorney says Baril is mentally ill. He says people with mental health problems need more community support.
