Child welfare officials have taken five children from the home of a couple accused of neglecting a 12-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy.

Authorities say the two children had apparently been locked in a closet for days at a time and had limited medical and dental care. Sabrina Golden-Hazel and Quincy Leon Hazel, both 44, were arrested Sunday. They remained Wednesday in the Palm Beach County Jail on neglect charges. It's unclear whether they have an attorney.

In a statement, Florida Department of Children and Families Secretary Mike Carroll called the abuse "outrageous and heartbreaking." An agency spokeswoman said there had been prior contact with the family, but offered no details.

Riviera Beach police say the 17-year-old ran away from the home weeks ago and told them of the abuse.
