A former Norfolk detective says she focused on a former sailor as a suspect in a 1997 rape and murder after learning that the man was obsessed with the victim.

Maureen Evans says she learned of Danial Williams' attraction to Michelle Moore-Bosko from one of their neighbors. Another detective got Williams to confess after hours of interrogation.

Evans testified Friday at an evidentiary hearing in Richmond for Williams and Joseph Dick Jr. They are two of the so-called Norfolk Four, who have long claimed that police coerced them into falsely confessing to sexually assaulting and killing Moore-Bosko.

In 2009, then-Gov. Tim Kaine freed them from prison because of doubts about their guilt, but he let their convictions stand. Now Williams and Dick are trying to get the convictions thrown out.
