A 21-year-old Southern California man accused of trying to join the Islamic State group vows revenge and identifies with the Charlie Hebdo massacre in France in a series of writings to a newspaper.

Adam Dandach sent four letters and two poems from jail to the Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/1Ony7es ). He pleaded not guilty last week to charges including attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist group.

Dandach first wrote the newspaper in October after a reporter contacted him and his mother. In January, he sent an untitled poem that he describes as an "explanation of my unfortunate situation" and "a message to my oppressors."

Dandach was detained as he prepared to board a plane for Turkey. Authorities say he wanted to slip into Syria.
