IRVINE, Calif. – A threat of violence has prompted the University of California, Irvine to cancel a meeting that was set to discuss a ban on flags in student government offices.
The student Legislative Council passed the ban on flags — including the U.S. flag — in its office lobby last week but a higher student panel vetoed it two days later. Tuesday evening's meeting was to discuss overturning that veto — although that was considered unlikely.
The flag ban sparked condemnation from many quarters.
In a statement Tuesday, the university said officials cancelled the meeting after receiving what it calls a "viable threat of violence" — although the threat wasn't specific.
The school says campus police have increased security and are asking students to report suspicious activities.
