Chicago's retired Cardinal Francis George is home after several days of evaluation at a hospital. He stopped treatment for cancer more than a month ago.

The Archdiocese of Chicago confirmed Sunday that George was released a day earlier from Loyola University Medical Center.

George said in January that doctors had run out of options for cancer treatment and that he was focusing on quality of life versus a cure. He stopped receiving an experimental drug treatment in December because it wasn't working.

Archdiocese officials had said he would be hospitalized while tests were done. They didn't say what prompted the hospital stay or give an update on his condition.

George stepped down in November as leader of Chicago's roughly 2 million Roman Catholics. Blase Cupich (blayz SOO'-pich) became Chicago's archbishop.
