A three-year-old Texas boy was killed after shooting himself in the head in an apparent accident, police say.
Harris County sheriff’s deputies said the incident took place at 12:30 pm Friday inside the two-story home where the boy lived. The boy’s mother and another sibling were the only ones in the house at the time, the Houston Chronicle reports.
The mother was in a different part of the house when she heard the gun go off, officials said. The mother rushed to the room and found the three-year-old with a gunshot wound to the jaw area, officials told the paper.
The boy was flown to a hospital, where he later died.
Authorities have not questioned the mother and were still trying to figure out how the boy obtained the gun, the paper reports.
The sheriff’s deputies said the case is likely to be presented to a county grand jury once the investigation is finished.
