The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a Japanese student reported overboard from a fishing vessel off Hawaii.

The Coast Guard said Tuesday a 17-year-old male was reported overboard from the Japanese training vessel Hokuho Maru about 140 miles (225 kilometers) southwest of Kauai.

The ship was transiting from Honolulu to Japan at the time.

The student was last seen at about 2:50 a.m. wearing a light green jump suit. It's not known if he was wearing a life jacket.

A Coast Guard plane from Oahu was diverted from a training mission to begin a search. Two Coast Guard cutters are on their way to help.

The Hokuho Maru is currently retracing its route to search for the missing student.
