A Minnesota man accused of trying to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group has been ordered to a halfway house while his case is pending.

U.S. District Judge Michael Davis ruled Tuesday that Abdullahi Yusuf can also return to school if he's able to enroll.

The 18-year-old Yusuf is charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. A criminal complaint says FBI agents stopped him at the Minneapolis airport last year as he attempted to leave the U.S. for Turkey.

Yusuf's attorneys had asked for full freedom if he promised to participate in courses that promote civic involvement.

Davis ordered the federal probation office to work with the program designers to come up with a proposal that would re-integrate Yusuf in the community.
