Oregon man, 24, dies in 1,000-foot fall from Alaska mountain

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska State Troopers say an Oregon man died while climbing Mount Yukla.

Troopers say Dasan Marshall of Portland, Oregon, was climbing with a friend on Sunday when he fell about 1,000 feet.

"Because he was so true to who he was," says Heidi Medema, "everybody he met was instantly drawn to him. He was a very enigmatic person and everybody he came into contact with adored him."

Medema is still trying to wrap her head around the death of her friend, and former co-worker Dasan Marshall.

At 24-year-old, she says had an adventurous soul beyond his years.

"I think Alaska just called to him because it is such an incredibly remote, adventurous place.  It really suited his personality," says Medema.

Marshall worked for two years at Northeast Portland's  Mountain Shop outdoor store before deciding to move to Alaska to go to college and climb mountains.

"As word spread through the shop," says Medema, "everybody was devastated.  We were definitely not expecting it.  Dasan was an incredibly calculated, precise, meticulous climber.  He was a student of climbing.  He studied it.  He lived it."

Because of the terrain in the Chugach Mountains, located about 6 miles from the Eagle River Nature Center, a helicopter was used to recover 24-year-old Marshall's body. The body was taken to the state medical examiner's office.

No foul play is suspected.
