Police say a North Carolina man is accused of beating a veteran he met at a gay bar.

The victim's longtime partner says the man had most of both arms amputated after he was severely burned when the hotel room they were in caught fire.

Twenty-six-year-old Garry Joseph Gupton has been charged with aggravated assault with intent to kill in connection with the early Sunday attack. Police spokeswoman Susan Danielsen says there is no indication the incident was motivated by the sexuality of the victim, 46-year-old Stephen Patrick White.

Gupton was arrested Sunday after an employee at a hotel called 911 to report a man screaming. Around the same time, the fire alarm was tripped. Firefighters found White unconscious and badly burned in a fourth-floor room.
