FORT EDWARD, N.Y. – Sleepy Hollow has the legend of the Headless Horseman. Does a community 150 miles farther up the Hudson River have a Headless Ranger buried in an unmarked Colonial-era cemetery?
The town and village of Fort Edward recently completed the long-sought purchase of 34 acres on an island in the river where the famed Rogers' Rangers were based during the French and Indian War. The property contains an unmarked cemetery believed to date back to the war, when Fort Edward was Britain's largest fortification in North America.
In 2006, state archaeologists examined seven human skeletons uncovered at the site. They said all the remains were intact -- except one that was missing its skull.
Historians say hundreds of soldiers died at Fort Edward, including some of the hundreds of Rangers who were encamped there.
