San Diego police say a suspect in the murder of a 14-year-old girl 30 years ago was a police criminalist -- who was found dead this week of an apparent suicide.

Investigators were preparing to arrest 62-year-old Kevin Charles Brown when his body was found Tuesday at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park in Julian.

Police say Brown was a civilian employee of the San Diego police laboratory from 1982 until his retirement in 2002 -- but he never worked on the case in which he was a suspect.

Cold-case detectives used DNA to link Brown and another man to the death of Claire Hough, who was found strangled and mutilated at Torrey Pines State Beach in August 1984.

The other suspect, Ronald Tatro, died in a Tennessee boating accident in 2011.
