School districts in Atlanta and Orlando have won the largest education award of its kind in the United States.

In a first for the prestigious $1 million Broad Prize for Urban Education, two districts are splitting the award. The announcement of the winners was made Monday.

The winners are Gwinnett County Public Schools in metro Atlanta and Orange County Public Schools in Orlando.

The 12-year-old prize rewards school districts for improving achievement among disadvantaged students.

The two winners were picked from a pool of 75 eligible districts.

The prize is sponsored by a foundation run by Edythe and Eli Broad, who made his fortune in home construction and insurance.
