A 16-year-old high school football player in New York City is dead after collapsing during practice Monday, officials said.

The teen's father says Miles Kirkland-Thomas collapsed Monday morning during practice for Staten Island's Curtis High School. A group of firefighters preformed CPR on Kirkland for several minutes, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital.

"They did chest compressions for about 10 minutes and then loaded him into the ambulance," one witness told The Staten Island Advance.

Jamar Thomas tells the New York Daily News his 6-foot-2, 320-pound son had passed a physical in July and the family was not aware of any pre-existing conditions.

Thomas says an autopsy will be conducted.
