A Long Island church will not be housing some of the thousands of immigrant children illegally crossing into the United States from Mexico to reunite with family.

The Rev. Dennis Walker of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Commack confirmed to Newsday on Monday the church had dropped the proposal, which had sparked outrage in the neighborhood.

Newsday says Lutheran leaders in Manhattan said the church missed a deadline to apply for the federally funded program. They said it was unlikely the proposal would become reality in the next few years.

The proposal fueled community opposition. Some said they had their own problems while others said there were better alternatives for the children.

More than 57,000 children entered the U.S. illegally between October and June without a parent or guardian.
