NEW YORK – Prosecutors in New York say a Tunisian man accused last year of plotting to organize a U.S.-based terrorism cell is "far more dangerous" than his guilty plea to immigration charges would indicate.
The government said in a pre-sentencing brief Monday in Manhattan federal court that Ahmed Abassi should be sentenced to more than six months in prison.
Abassi pleaded guilty last month, admitting he lied about why he came to the United States in 2013.
He faces up to six years in prison when he is sentenced Wednesday. His lawyer has recommended he be sentenced to time served.
Prosecutors say he was investigated after he was introduced to an undercover U.S. investigator in Canada by a man now charged with plotting to derail a train between New York and Montreal.
