A woman has been arrested on charges she abandoned her baby at a Manhattan subway station.

Police said Tuesday that Frankea Dabbs told them that she's homeless and felt she could no longer take care of the little girl.

Police say she pushed the baby's stroller onto a subway platform on Monday and then got back on a train. She was found early Tuesday near Central Park.

The mother has told detectives in a preliminary interview that she's from North Carolina and came to New York last week. She says the baby's father died recently.

NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis says the woman says she thought she was leaving the baby in a "safe space."

The baby is about 10 months old and appears to be in good condition.
